Relax, Professor Says, Disease Is Curable
EXPERTS have identified the virus that's behind a series of deaths by tick bites centered in Henan and Shandong provinces. It's a new type of Bunyaviridae, a family of viruses that occasionally infects humans through mosquitoes, ticks or sandflies, said an expert panel with China's Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Professor Xu Xiaoyuan, a member of the panel, said there is no reason for public panic because the disease is curable, and has been concentrated in specific parts of the country. Professor Wang Guiqiang, another panel member, said some patients with slight symptoms are able to recover by themselves without taking any medicine. Those seriously stricken may respond to treatment.
At least 13 people in Henan and 18 people in Shandong died of infection by tick bites.
