'Reliable,' but guilty of taking bribes ...
A FORMER vice mayor of Maoming City, Guangdong Province, stood trial yesterday for allegedly taking 11 million yuan (US$1.7 million) in bribes and holding assets worth 41 million yuan he couldn't account for.
Yang Guangliang, 56, who was said to have 14 apartments, more than 60 bankbooks and two mistresses while gaining a reputation as "an incorruptible official and loyal husband," pled guilty to most charges against him at the Intermediate People's Court of Guangzhou yesterday.
Yang said he began taking bribes when he was deputy head of Dianbai County in the mid-1980s.
Officials of the county's fiscal bureau offered him a total of 50,000 yuan to express appreciation for his approval of the allocation of government funds to them. More officials in different departments in Maoming City did the same after Yang gained promotions, prosecutors said.
He allegedly received more than 1.75 million yuan from district and city government departments, fire stations and hospitals from 2003 to 2009 "for his help."
Yang also raked in large profits by approving land deals, contracting government projects and offering favorable policies to companies.
Yang was known for his "reliability," which meant he would offer a fair price for the favors he performed and would even make refunds if he failed to deliver.
Yang admitted most of the charges against him but denied one that he had accepted 5 million yuan from a chemical company manager.
The court didn't hand down a verdict yesterday.
