Religious groups ‘should be valued’

CHINESE President Xi Jinping said yesterday that religious development in China should be independent from foreign influence.

“We must manage affairs in accordance with the law and adhere to the principle of independence to run religious groups by our own accord,” Xi said at a high-level Party meeting that sought to unite non-Communist Party groups and individuals.

“Efforts should be made to incorporate religions into socialist society,” he said.

Authorities must value the influence of people in the religious sphere and guide them to better serve the nation’s development, harmony and unification, Xi said.

He promised to fully implement the Party’s policy of religious freedom and manage religious affairs in line with the law.

The president also called for a balanced attitude toward religion in China.

Xi asked authorities to befriend and recruit more non-Communist Party intellectuals and representatives.

Cooperating with non-Party intellectuals is strategically important work in uniting the nation and realizing the Chinese dream of national rejuvenation, Xi told the three-day meeting on united front work in Beijing, which closed yesterday.

Long-term unity has greatly contributed to China’s economic development, social stability and national unification, he said, adding that it is fundamental to stick to the leadership of the Communist Party of China to better deal with united front work.

The multiparty cooperation and political consultation system led by the Communist Party is mainly managed by the CPPCC, China’s top political advisory body. The system should be improved to ensure that people from democratic parties or without party affiliation can fully participate in political affairs, the president said.

There also should be more political discussion and consultation under the system to ensure consensus and optimize decision-making. Xi said that a high value should be placed on intellectuals in new economic and social organizations, and they should exercise their roles in development.

Xi called for officials to establish regular contacts with outstanding intellectuals from new media organizations and encourage them to make contributions to purifying cyberspace.

He also called for expanding the selection and use of non-Party representatives who accept the leadership of the Communist Party and have strong political abilities.
