Removed for deadly illegal demolition
FOUR senior government officials in Shanxi Province have been removed from their posts and are under investigation after being held responsible for an illegal demolition that caused the death of one villager and seriously injured another, the People's Daily's website reported yesterday.
Ji Jianzhong, deputy chief of Jinyuan District in Shanxi Province's Taiyuan, was in charge of the reconstruction project where the illegal demolition occurred. He was charged with "primary leadership responsibility."
One government officer with the housing and construction department and two with the district government were also suspended from duty and being investigated for lack of leadership.
On the night of 30 October, 10 people hired by a demolition company smashed the windows and stormed into the house of two sleeping victims in Guzhai Village in Jinyuan District.
The gang assaulted the two until they passed out. After dumping them on a remote road, the group used excavators to demolish the house. One of the victims, Meng, aged 54, died on the spot while Wu escaped fate by pretending to be dead.
Five men in the gang were detained on November 1 and the manager of the demolition firm was also under investigation along with the four government officers.
Meanwhile, the law school of Beijing University yesterday asked for the State Council's approval to restart discussions on rules over demolishing houses, the Beijing News reported yesterday.
The State Council, or Cabinet, had previously invited five scholars to a hearing to establish such regulations a year ago, but no results were released so far.
