Renmin University admissions head caught fleeing amid reported graft investigation

THE director of admissions for renowned Renmin University in Beijing has been placed under investigation over graft allegations, the Legal Evening News reported.
Cai Rongsheng, 48, director of the Admission and Employment Office, was caught when he tried to take a flight from southern city of Shenzhen to Canada with a fake passport, the newspaper said.
Wang Jian, deputy director of the university’s Party disciplinary authority, said Cai had been caught in Shenzhen and confirmed he was under investigation, the newspaper reported.
Official from the university’s publicity department confirmed Cai was in trouble in connection with student admissions. Cai started working for Renmin University in 2003.
The Legal Evening News cited unnamed sources from a Weibo post as saying that the graft allegations involved hundreds of millions of yuan.
The Weibo post has been deleted and the information could not be verified —police and prosecutors haven’t responded.
The newspaper, citing the post, said Hu Juan, ex-secretary of the university headmaster, has been removed from her post to aid in the investigation.
Zhang Keyun, once a professor with Renmin University, cited insiders as saying that Cai was caught about five to six days ago after he was tipped to the investigation.
“As far as I know, some other officials of Renmin University are also being investigated,” Zhang told the newspaper.
Zhang had predicted that problems would appear since Chinese universities started applying a pilot program using independent enrollment nearly 10 years ago.
Zhang argued that Chinese universities are more like administrative departments than academic institutions. Zhang said administrative officials as a result are able to intervene too much and abuse their powers, and are susceptible to bribery.
