Renowned writer beaten in property dispute

A well-known Chinese author was severely beaten up by four gangsters in his home in Xishuangbanna, southwestern Yunnan Province over a property dispute, local police said this morning.

Ma Yuan, the 59-year-old avant-garde writer, was attacked early yesterday morning by the men, including their boss Zhou Hailin, over the lease of an abandoned school house.

Ye Haiping, the chief of Gelanghe Hanni Ethinc Township Central Elementary School, illegally rented the house to Zhou for personal gains, but the government reclaimed the public property and lent it to Ma. This irritated Zhou, the police said.

Zhou gathered three followers in the wee hours and broke into Ma's place to force him to move out. After Ma said no, the four men began to beat him and kicked him to the ground, the police said.

Later, Ma posted eight pictures on his Weibo microblog, showing bruises all over his body. "I fell into a short coma and lost my memory for about 20 minutes. I had no idea about how the gangsters left the house," Ma said on his microblog.

"I developed incontinence and had 17 wounds, mostly in the head and in the right leg. I can hardly sleep at night," he added.

Police said they have detained the four attackers and Ye has been suspended to face investigation.
