Report: Developers using inferior sea sand in construction projects
CHEAP and inferior sea sand is widely used in Shenzhen construction projects, putting them at risk, but supervisors simply turn a blind eye, according to industry insiders who spoke to CCTV.
The sub-standard sea sand contains high levels of chloride and is not processed in fresh water. Chloride penetration will destroy concrete structures, experts told the television channel.
Driven by high profits, developers replace expensive river sand with much cheaper sea sand. A sandpit worker said one square meter of river sand costs at least 165 yuan (US$26.5), but the same amount of sea sand is priced at 30 yuan, state-run CCTV reported.
The news program also found workers wash the sand with sea water instead of fresh water.
Many Shenzhen construction projects including residential complexes, welfare housing and commercial buildings use sea sand with excessive chloride.
Developers like China Resources Holdings Co Ltd are on the list of firms that use sea sand for its projects, CCTV reported.
Insider said authorities don't test for chloride because too much work will pose heavy burden. Also, the law doesn't specify which government department is responsible for construction quality, the insider told CCTV.
