Report: Rescued babies were sold by parents

THE 15 babies who have been rescued in a police sting on human trafficking were all sold by their parents, officers in Guangdong Province found.

The parents in Wenshan Prefecture, a poor area of Yunnan Province where baby trafficking is rampant, received at least 10,000 yuan (US$1,605) for a baby girl and 30,000 yuan to 35,000 yuan for a boy, Dongjiang Times reported today, citing Xie Ying, a police officer in Huizhou City.

"Residents like to compare their wealth with each other. They can build a new house with the money earned by selling a son and a daughter," Xie was quoted as saying.

Some of the parents have been traced, but they denied selling their children. Only one baby has been claimed by its mother while the others are still in orphanages.

Xie told the newspaper migrant workers from Wenshan acted as middlemen, contacting sellers in Wenshan and buyers in Huizhou.

In a joint police crackdown in October, 38 suspects were caught with 26 of them charged by Huizhou prosecutors, the report said.
