Report: Shanghai residents rank 4th for giving in China
Shanghai ranks as China's No. 2 city when it comes to overall charitable donations, after the southern city of Shenzhen, a report by the Chinese government said yesterday.
But in terms of per capita donations, Shanghai residents ranked fourth, with an average Shanghai local donating slightly more than 100 yuan (US$15) each year in 2008 and 2009.
The report was completed by an office authorized by the Ministry of Civil Affairs.
Residents of Shenzhen, a special economic zone in Guangdong Province, donated 394 yuan per person in comparison and ranked at the top of the donation list.
Shenzhen was followed by Xiamen in Fujian Province and Wuxi in Jiangsu Province in terms of their citizens' yearly donations.
For overall charity performance, Shanghai followed Shenzhen as the second-best, the report said.
In appraising a city's overall charity performance, the report looked at other aspects of charity, in addition to donations. These included the number of charity organizations and programs, volunteer services, government support systems and other related cultural programs.
The report concluded that China's middle-region cities generally had a lower awareness about charities than eastern and western cities.
The investigators surveyed charities of major Chinese cities across the country in 2008 and 2009.
