Reporter jailed for fabricating negative Zoomlion stories

A former Guangzhou-based reporter was sentenced to 22 months in prison today for fabricating financial scandals against Zoomlion Heavy Industry Science and Technology Co, a leading construction machinery maker.

Chen Yongzhou, a former employee of New Express Daily, was found guilty of defamation and bribery, announced Luyue District People’s Court in Changsha City, Hunan Province.

Chen was paid to write a dozen fabricated reports in 2012 and 2013 about Changsha-based Zoomlion, accusing the company of cooking the books, illegally transferring benefits, mishandling state-owned assets and excessive advertising spending.

The court said Chen was paid 30,000 yuan in May 2013 for publishing fabricated reports. The court did not identify who paid Chen.

Previous reports alleged Sany Group Co Ltd, a rival, had planted the stories, citing a Zoomlion employee. Sany has denied any wrongdoing and the allegations haven’t been proven.

Chen was also fined 20,000 yuan.
