Reprieve for killer wife on death row
A WOMAN who was sentenced to death for murdering her abusive husband was yesterday granted a two-year reprieve, which could become a life sentence with the possibility of parole.
The reprieve is part of new guidelines on domestic violence cases that include recommendations for sentencing victims who commit crimes against their abusers.
The high court in southwest China’s Sichuan Province ordered the reprieve for 44-year-old Li Yan, who was originally sentenced to death in 2011. However, evidence showed that her husband Tan Yong had severely abused her and the country’s supreme court ordered a retrial last June.
Li’s attorney Wan Miaoyan said: “I met her yesterday, and she kept saying sorry to the family of the victim. Before the retrial began, the family of the victim used the most abusive words to insult her, and even threw shoes at her.”
