Rescue effort continues for trapped 10
RESCUE efforts continued yesterday to find 10 workers trapped in a collapsed railway tunnel in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
The accident happened at about 2:35pm on Friday when workers were digging the tunnel in Zhuozi County of Ulanqab City, about 150 kilometers from regional capital Hohhot and 400 kilometers from Beijing, an official with the region's work safety administration said.
An estimated 2,000 cubic meters of rock and dirt caved in but experts said supporting framework in the tunnel could protect the workers and increase their chances of survival.
More than 300 rescuers and 60 machines drilled into the rubble through Friday night hoping to improve ventilation and sending supplies to the trapped workers.
No progress had been reported early yesterday, the emergency rescue headquarters said.
The tunnel is for a railway linking Ulanqab City's Jining District and Baotou City, Inner Mongolia.
