Rescue effort under way as landslide buries dorm
A LANDSLIDE buried more than 20 workers in a makeshift dormitory at a quarry in southern China yesterday, following heavy rain over the weekend.
There was no immediate reports on casualties in the village of Luojiang, about a three-hour drive from the resort city of Guilin in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.
Police and other rescuers equipped with excavators were searching for survivors yesterday.
The landslide hit the quarry about 1:30pm, burying the dormitory in a pile of sludge the length of a football field.
The mud completely buried the dormitory, according to reporters at the scene. Emergency services are digging through the debris in a bid to find survivors.
Two excavators are also operating at the site.
Guilin was hit by heavy downpours on Saturday evening and Sunday, with rainfall exceeding 100 mm at 25 monitoring stations around the city by Sunday afternoon.
The nearby village of Zhongfeng was partially flooded, with 70 residents evacuated from their homes.
The heavy rain also created problems for tourists as 130 travelers were briefly stranded at a country resort.
In neighboring Guangdong Province, rainstorms triggered floods that left two people missing and affected 80,000 residents.
The floods resulted in the destruction of 379 homes. Six bridges and several large swathes of farmland were damaged by the floodwaters.
