Rescue in the desert
A group of 14 journalists, including four foreigners, got lost in a northwest China desert on Friday but were soon found by local rescuers, authorities in Gansu Province said yesterday.
The team, three Germans, a Briton and 10 China Central Television staff, lost their way while shooting a documentary on cultural heritage protection in the desert in Guazhou County of Jiuquan City, the provincial government said.
Local authorities received reports at around 5pm and sent rescuers and vehicles into the desert. All the journalists were found by 6pm.
They had suffered sunstroke after long hours of driving in the scorching heat, said Liang Heping, head of the foreign affairs office in Guazhou County.
Liang said the journalists were sent to the People's Hospital in Dunhuang City. "Two were serious, but all are in a stable condition."
