Rescue team: bill 'legal' as we risked our lives

THE leader of a traffic rescue team in Guangzhou, capital of the southern Guangdong Province, said that the 60,719 yuan they charged a driver for getting his truck out of a crash scene was "legal and reasonable" because they risked their lives in the rescue.

Zhou Jiliang, head of the rescue team of Xincheng Automotive Transportation Service Company, told Jinghua Times that the local price bureau's rates for traffic rescue were already "out of date" and "should be revised."

According to the existing rates, using a truck crane in traffic rescue costs about 2,000 yuan. The rate can be increased by no more than 50 percent, depending on tonnage and distance. But in this case, the truck crane charge was 45,000 yuan.

Zhou said the rates only worked for "on-road" accidents. But in this accident, the truck had slid off the road and was not an "on-road" accident.

An officer surnamed Tan from Guangzhou traffic police told the newspaper that they had no idea about the expensive bill and they would not get any benefit from the bill.

"Traffic rescue teams are selected by the government through bidding," Tan said. "Our job is to call the nearest team to come to the rescue."
