Rescuers battle to save 25 miners
THE death toll of a coal mine explosion in central China's Henan Province has risen to 54, with 25 miners still trapped underground by 8am today.
The rescue work is continuing, China News Service reported.
The compensation to the dead workers will be no less than 200,000 yuan (US$29,412) each, the Henan Province government said.
The gas blast occurred around 1am in the Xinhua No. 4 pit in Xinhua District of Pingdingshan. The mine had been operating without authorization, the report said.
A total of 93 people were working in the pit when the accident occurred, of whom 14 managed to escape.
