Rescuers mourn for landslide victims
RESCUERS and officials on Saturday held a mourning ritual for the victims of the landslide in Shenzhen, south China’s Guangdong Province.
Rescuers downed tools, vehicles honked their horns and white flowers were scattered on the debris in the traditional ceremony.
Some people in China believe that on the seventh day after death the souls of the departed return to pay their final visits to families.
Seven people have been confirmed dead, but 75 are still missing, according to official figures. Just one person has been pulled from the debris, but rescue efforts are ongoing.
“I hope the dead can rest in peace. I also hope this brings some comfort to the families of the missing,” a rescuer said.
Yang Huanning, chief of the State Administration of Work Safety, said that his organization is investigating the cause of the landslide and will punish those responsible.
The State Council on Friday deemed the landslide to have been a work safety incident and not a natural disaster.
Meanwhile, the Guangdong government has vowed to crack down on illegal dump sites of construction waste across the province, setting up a series of “forbidden zones” where such storage facilities are not allowed, including heavily populated areas and places prone to natural disasters.
Existing dump sites in such areas will be relocated “soon,” it said.
The government said it will enhance supervision over the treatment of construction waste and will severely punish violators.
It said a long-term mechanism will be set up to handle construction waste and to prevent similar disasters.
Also on Saturday, the Supreme People’s Procuratorate said it will investigate the landslide alongside prosecutors from Guangdong for suspected crimes.
