Rescuers on way to avalanche

RESCUE teams have been dispatched to the site of an avalanche that killed two people and left four trapped in the Yarlung Tsangpo River Canyon in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, local authorities said yesterday.

The government of Meiling County in Nyingchi prefecture received a report at 5pm on Friday that an avalanche had killed two people and injured another two, an official said.

One of the injured has a broken foot, while the other suffered a leg fracture. Two uninjured team members are also trapped in the nature reserve.

The avalanche occurred on April 30, and one of the team of seven managed to get back and raise the alarm on Friday.

A rescue team left at 8pm on Friday and is set to take four or five days to reach the scene. A second team left on Saturday with a third setting out today.
