Research plan for top award goes up in smoke

The China National Tobacco Corp has withdrawn its research on cigarette improvement from a top award competition amid a nationwide outcry, with opponents accusing it of promoting smoking and misleading the public.

China's National Office for Science and Technology Awards said yesterday that it has received 33 objections since March on the "Chinese-style cigarette" research, which focused on adding fragrance and enhancing taste.

The research had added 173 billion yuan (US$27.429 billion) to the country's cigarette sales over the past three years, research results suggest.

The application for the research has attracted a rash of negative voices from public and experts alike.

More than 10 academicians, including renowned medical whistleblower Zhong Nanshan, drafted a public protest letter early last month.

Around 120 people, mostly senior engineers and experts, have added their names to a protest list on a science news portal, www.sciencenet.cn, and called on people to add their names to the list against the tobacco corporation's application for the award.

Experts say the study violates China's rules on science and technology progress and the World Health Organization's Framework Convention on Tobacco Control because it harms public health and popularizes the tobacco industry.
