Resettlement buildings found faulty

AUTHORITIES in Qinghai Province in northwestern China have asked contractors to rebuild or renovate 21 apartment buildings which they found were jerry-built. These buildings were part of a government-funded affordable housing project.

As part of an 800 million yuan (US$123 million) resettlement scheme, the largest in the province, 22,600 local residents were to move into 154 newly built apartment buildings.

Six construction companies from Zhejiang, Jiangsu and Qinghai provinces, claiming to be first-class builders in China, undertook the housing project in April 2010.

During a quality inspection last month, Qinghai authorities found 21 of the 154 buildings had serious defects such as steel rods sticking out of concrete and shaky balcony railings. They asked all the ongoing constructions to be halted and demanded reconstruction of three buildings with poor structures, Xinhua news agency said yesterday.

Peng Yihong, who is in charge of the project, told Xinhua that a tight schedule contributed to the problems.
