Residents claim plant polluted air and water
RESIDENTS living next to a chemical plant which has not passed an environmental assessment in an east China county have accused the factory of releasing noxious gas and contaminating tap water.
Residents started to feel dizzy and short of breath after they moved in the apartments in September last year in Ganxian County, Jiangxi Province.
They complained they couldn't open windows as black gas with an unpleasant odor was discharged from a chimney at the chemical plant every night, local-based New Legal Report said yesterday.
In addition, moss was found in tap water for almost a year, raising speculation that the chemical plant, Chengzheng Nonferrous Metal, polluted the tap water source.
Although the local water supply company and disease control center issued reports saying the tap water met standards, this failed to convince residents.
The local housing authority said their good intentions were misunderstood by the residents. They low-rent houses were built in the industrial area so that people could find job and go to work easily, Xiao Zhiyun, director of Ganxian house administration bureau, told the newspaper.
Xiao added the low-rent houses were built following legal procedures.
The chemical plant was built before the low-rent houses, Director of Ganxian Environmental Protection Bureau, surnamed Gan, told the newspaper.
Gan said the plant has been ordered to suspend production as it didn't pass environmental assessments and complaints have been filed against it.
