Residents find out the naked truth about Russians
Russian women sunbathing on their balcony in the nude have shocked Chinese residents living opposite, who condemned their behavior as "embarrassing" and "shameful."
Meanwhile, a man who swam naked in a river has been detained after women who saw him called the police.
The two cases sparked heated discussion online in a country where nudity is still a sensitive and controversial topic for many Chinese people.
The Russian women recently moved into an apartment in Fuzhou, capital of southeast China's Fujian Province. Residents in the community said they usually went to work during the evening and had taken to sunning themselves on their apartment's balcony during the day. Some were naked, others wore G-strings and they could be seen clearly from the apartments opposite, residents told a local newspaper.
"We can see those women going to their balcony nakedly at 3pm to 5pm almost every sunny day," said a resident surnamed Chen.
Chen said she had to draw the curtains in her apartment to prevent her young sons from seeing the naked women, the Strait Metropolis Daily reported.
Chen said she and other residents had complained repeatedly to the community's property management company, telling them to ask the Russian women to "respect Chinese traditions."
But company officials told the newspaper they could do nothing. The women told them it was their freedom to choose how to dress while they were at home, just as they did in Russia.
A lawyer told the newspaper the women weren't breaking any laws by wearing little or no clothes at home.
Meanwhile, in south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region public nudity led to a man being detained by police in Hechi City after he went for a naked swim on Sunday.
According to China News Service, several women were swimming in a river when the man jumped in wearing no clothes. The frightened women immediately swam back to the bank, the agency said.
The man was in the water for about 10 minutes before he ended his swim.
The agency said many people said they felt embarrassed by such behavior while female residents expressed their anger at his actions. Police said the man would be detained for five to 10 days for exposing himself in public.
In a country that has seen marked progress in reform and opening up, nudity is still controversial.
In a recent case, a TV news report censored the private parts of Michelangelo's "David."
In another, many movie fans were disappointed when they found that China's Administration of Radio, Film, and Television had censored Kate Winslet's breasts in "Titanic 3D."
