Residents get involved

RESIDENTS living next to the Pearl River in Guangzhou are being asked to turn on their lights and leave their houses on the night of the opening ceremony of the Asian Games.

Residents living in 37 buildings in Liede Village in Guangzhou's Zhujiang New Town, Guangdong Province, will be required to leave their houses on the evening of November 12.

Those living next to the river need to gather at the town square at 4pm and others must leave their houses at 6pm, the Nanfang Daily reported yesterday.

They can return to their homes after 11pm. Each person will receive a 100 yuan (US$15) subsidy and those living next to the river will get an extra 50 yuan to cover dinner.

Large TV screens will be set up in public spaces to show the opening ceremony or residents can watch free movies at the community hall.

A resident said on his online blog that the police had sent them soft toys of the five goats which are the Games' mascots, three tickets to the actual Games as well as cash?subsidies.
