Residents want government to buy damaged homes

TIANJIN residents whose homes were destroyed or damaged in the disaster showed up at a government news conference yesterday to demand compensation and accountability.

Owners of nearby apartments unfurled banners demanding compensation for their damaged homes. Many were wearing masks, and some were in bandages. Many people in the area suffered injuries from glass shattered in the huge fireballs that lit up the night sky late on Wednesday night.

Residents in one neighborhood are asking that the local government to buy back their houses.

Qihangjiayuan is 800 meters away from the blast site and some of the apartments there suffered substantial damage — broken furniture, cracked walls, windows and door frames — according to pictures provided by residents.

More than a hundred of them gathered in front of the Tianjin Mayfair Hotel yesterday morning where a local government press conference on the blast was due to take place, according to a report in the Beijing Times.

The newspaper said they had a letter with them that read: “Residents of Qihangjiayuan have become homeless and lived under the shadow of the explosions for days. While feeling terribly sorry for the sacrificed firefighters, we want the government to pay more attention to the affected public, and send staff to communicate with Qihangjiayuan residents.”

It went on: “The neighborhood residents are very worried about the chemical pollution caused by the dangerous item blast, as well as the damage to the buildings caused by the explosion impact. We require the government to buy back the apartments so as to cover the property owners’ loss.”

There are eight highrises in the Qihangjiayuan neighborhood which has more than 900 apartments.

The complex was first occupied in 2013.

Tianjin publicity department officials told the newspaper proper measures would be taken to meet residents’ requests.
