Restaurant blast kills 1, injures a dozen; some still missing

ONE person was confirmed dead and more than 10 others were badly injured after an explosion ripped through a barbecue restaurant in Panjin, a city in the northeastern Liaoning Province.

The blast occurred around 6pm yesterday when there were about 70 customers eating in the restaurant in downtown Xingsi Street, according to the local Liaoshen Evening Post.

Most of the victims suffered wounds in their heads and abdomens. Five were rushed to the Panjin No. 1 People's Hospital for treatment.

Initial investigation showed the blast was caused by gas leakage, the paper said.

Hundreds of rescuers searched for survivors in the wrecked restaurant as several people were reported missing.

The blast shattered windows of nearby buildings and tossed cars parked in front of the restaurant to the other side of the street, the report said.

"The tremendous bang almost knocked me down," said Li Hong, a passer-by at the time of explosion.

An adjacent restaurant owner was also reported missing, the paper said.
