Retired vehicles sputter on despite rules
THREE in four end-of-life vehicles in China are still running on the road, a Beijing-based newspaper reported today.
China is likely to turn from "the world's biggest parking lot" as it is now into "the world's biggest auto dump yard," said Economic Information Daily.
According to a report by China Automobile Dealers Association last December, the country should have more than 2 million retired vehicles annually based on booming sales in recent years, but only about half million of them were delivered to recyclers.
The 11 auto recycling centers in northeast Jilin Province collected only 10,000 waste vehicles last year, but the province should have about 100,000 vehicles written off the road in the same year, the newspaper said.
Most of the end-of-life vehicle owners would rather go to second-hand dealers than take subsidies from recyclers, it added.
