Retiree fights for his name after giving stranger free lift

A retiree in eastern Anhui Province has appealed against a 30,000-yuan (US$4,755) court fine for illegal business because he gave a stranger a free ride back in 2008, China Youth Daily reported today.

Li Rongshou, 67, was approached by a woman outside a hospital in Hefei, the provincial capital three years ago. She asked for a lift on his motorcycle because she couldn't find a taxi.

Li agreed but he never thought his kindness would bring him so much trouble.

The retired worker was stopped by the city's law enforcement officials for illegal taxi business and his motorcycle was confiscated.

"I didn't take any money. I just gave her a free ride on my way," Li told the officials, according to the report.

But the officials considered it was against the norm that Li was taking a stranger on his motorcycle and there must be a fee agreement between them. Li denied that he had an agreement with the woman.

In 2010 Li lost his second appeal to the Intermediate People's Court of Hefei, but he did not give up and submitted his case to the Higher People's Court of Hefei.
