‘Revenge behind fatal blaze’

A MAN accused of starting a fire in a hospital car park that killed four people was seeking revenge after being caught stealing a scooter there, police said yesterday.

The 27-year-old, surnamed Li, is alleged to have set fire to a scooter in the parking lot of the No.2 Hospital in Huangshi, in central China’s Hubei Province, around 4am on Sunday.

The fire caused the gas tank in a nearby scooter to explode and several cars and a van also caught fire. Flames then spread to the hospital, police said.

The Wuhan Morning Post said doctor Duan Min died at the scene and a patient died after jumping from the burning building.

Two patients in intensive care died after being transferred.

The remaining 290 patients have been moved, said a police officer.

Firefighters put out the fire at around 4:50am, but more than 200 square meters of the ground floor were destroyed.

Li was found by police at his room at 11am on Sunday. Officers say Li told them he hadn’t considered the possible consequences.

Police said he had attempted to steal a scooter from the hospital last September, but security guards stopped him.
