Reward is doubled in search for ax murderer
HUBEI police doubled a reward for anyone who can provide tips leading to the capture of a man who allegedly killed eight people with an ax in Hubei Province. The reward is now up to 100,000 yuan (US$14,600). The Ministry of Public Security also issued a top-level wanted circular to hunt him nationwide.
Meng Jianzhu, head of the ministry, requested policemen solve the case as soon as possible, according to a report of the Hubei-based Changjiang Times yesterday. Police believe the suspect, Xiong Zhenlin, 35, is still in Hubei.
According to a police preliminary probe, Xiong was said to have driven a motorcycle to a hotel on Monday morning. He rented a room, but never checked in. He later spent 60 yuan on new clothes, the report said.
He told the hotel owner that he was going to take a train to Hubei's Zaoyang City and would pick up his motorcycle at the hotel the next day.
Originally rewards of 5,000 yuan to 50,000 yuan were offered to people who gave information leading to his capture and conviction.
Police said Xiong called his mother about 3am on Monday. He told her to collect some valuables at his waste recycling station and never contact him in the future.
She realized something was wrong with her son and walked 10 kilometers to his recycling station, only to find the door was locked and nobody answered.
Xiong visited his ex-wife's adopted daughter on Sunday and brought her a bag of oranges, the report said.
The manhunt began on Monday after 42-year-old Zhu Deqing and her 2-year-old grandson Zou Chuanshuo were found dead in their home in Suizhou City's Luoyang Town. Police found six more bodies at Xiong's waste recycling station. The victims were Xiong's employees.
