Reward offered after man run over by gang

A REWARD of 20,000 yuan (US$2,930) has been offered by Guangdong Province police to help catch thieves who killed a 63-year-old man who tried to stop them stealing washing machines.

Cai Changlu, a Chongqing City native who transported cargo to a warehouse in Shunde District of Guangzhou City in the province, stood in front of their van to prevent their escape - but the gang ran him over and dragged him for about 30 meters, yesterday's Chongqing Economic Times reported.

The police have got the plate number of the vehicle - a white Jinbei van, the paper reported, quoting Shunde police officer Wen Guanhua. Cai died at the scene.

The Shunde government and police have offered 1,000 yuan to Cai's family, Wen revealed.

The thieves, if convicted, could get the death penalty, according to lawyers.

Ma Yinghao, a driver who deliberately ran over a passenger Wu Zhi again after accidentally knocking him down in Shijiazhuang City, capital of Hebei Province, on December 27, 2005, was sentenced to death in July 2006 for manslaughter.
