Rewards for heroes of air arson attack
Shenzhen Airlines held an awards ceremony yesterday for crew and passengers who prevented a man setting a fire on a flight from Taizhou in east China’s Zhejiang Province to Guangzhou in southern Guangdong Province on July 26.
Nine crew members were awarded a total of 2.5 million yuan (US$400,000) and each of the two passengers 150,000 yuan for their heroism.
Previously, the Civil Aviation Administration of China awarded the crew 300,000 yuan and the two passengers 30,000 yuan each.
The man was subdued after he tried to set a seat on fire on the flight that had more than 100 people on board.
In a statement, the airline said a flight attendant had smelled gas, noticed liquid traces on two seats and immediately reported it to other crew members. When the man, who was wielding a knife, tried to set the liquid on fire, the crew immediately smothered the flames and fought with him.
The two passengers joined in to help subdue the would-be arsonist.
