Rich entrepreneur arrested for robbery crime 21 years ago

SHANDONG Province police have arrested a multimillionaire in the city of Qingdao who robbed a truckload of goods 21 years ago in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province with three cousins, the Yangtze Evening News reported today.

The 41-year-old man surnamed Yu and his cousins are natives of central China's Henan Province. They committed the truck robbery after their business in Nanjing failed and they stole 150,000 yuan (US$23,505) worth of goods.

His three cousins were caught soon after the robbery. Two were sentenced to death and another was jailed for life. Yu remained at large for 21 years. He created a false identity in 1994 and began to live a new life.

Yu got married and moved his home to Qingdao where he ran an auto repair shop and a logistics company. He owns four houses and two luxurious cars, the police said.

Yu said he "always wanted" to hand himself over to the police, but he dared not to do so after hearing that two of his cousins had been sentenced to death.

A legal expert told newspaper that Yu would not be sentenced to death because today's law is more refined than it was 21 years ago.
