Rickets blamed on dietary supplements for babies
A Guangdong product safety watchdog is probing allegations that several babies in eastern Zhenjiang Province are suffering from rickets after consuming dietary supplements sold by a company in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.
Some parents claimed that the substandard cod liver oil capsules and milk calcium capsules sold by Guangzhou KingKeys Nutrition Company caused their babies' rickets.
But the Guangzhou Bureau of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine has not confirmed the cause, saying the two products have been tightly sealed after they were imported from Norway.
"The quarantine authorities are responsible for quality check. Guangzhou is where the finished goods are packaged and labeled in Chinese," the Guangzhou Daily cited the bureau as saying.
KingKeys has sent product samples to a Guangdong inspection center and a Swiss certification institution for further examination, the report said.
A company official surnamed Huang has dismissed the company's connection with the disease because the affected toddlers showed an excessive level of phosphate instead of cadmium, according to the hospital reports.
"Our products have undergone a series of inspection before entering the market," she said, adding that the company will do its "utmost to cooperate with the investigators and take due responsibilities."
