Riders tumble off subway escalator in Beijing
A Beijing subway station escalator suddenly lost control this morning and threw more than 20 riders off their feet, causing cuts and bruises, the Legal Evening News reported.
The accident happened around 9:50am when the escalator at the Beijing Zoo Station of Line 4 suddenly went out of control, sending the 20-plus riders tumbling down on top of each other. Those who were injured were sent to a nearby hospital.
The incident forced the closure of one of the station's three exits. And the cause of the accident is still under investigation.
A Weibo microblogger, nicknamed Haohaitingquan, wrote that: "I saw the bloody scene at the Beijing Zoo Station. The whole passageway smelled of blood."
Opened to service in September 2009, subway Line 4 connects Peking University, Renmin University, Xidan and Beijing South Railway Station.
