Ring suspected of stealing infants in hospital

TWO suspects have been denied in connection with an infant-trafficking ring that took healthy babies from their parents in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province after convincing the parents that the babies had died or were severely disabled.

The ring is suspected of selling at least seven infants and police are trying to trace where the babies went, Chinese Business View reported today.

A third suspect, an obstetrician surnamed Zhang in Fuping County Maternal and Child Health Hospital, has been suspended and was being interrogated by police.

The newspaper said Zhang is suspected of telling the parents the babies had died and been disposed of, or they were so disabled that they not try to raise them.

Unlike what happened in this case, doctors are required to report to the authorities cases in which infants have health problems.
