Ring toss proves costly

A MAN who found a diamond ring and threw it away when he thought it was fake has been ordered by a Beijing court to pay 46,000 yuan (US$6,785) to the ring's owner.

The Beijing No.2 Intermediate People's Court said the man, surnamed Zhang, failed to take care of the ring he found and should pay its value to the owner, today's Beijing News reported. The owner surnamed Wang told the court that she lost her ring at a parking lot in July last year. She appealed for help to police, who checked security cameras and discovered Zhang had picked it up. They found Zhang but he said he thought the diamond was a fake and discarded it later.
