River pollution may be discharged by mines

ILLEGAL sewage discharged from mines could be the source of river pollution in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, local authorities said after a preliminary investigation.

As of yesterday, 112 enterprises along the Hejiang River in Hezhou City were forced to suspend operations after dead fish had been found in a section of the river since July 1.

"Hezhou has launched investigations into enterprises, including some mining companies along the Hejiang River, to find the source of the pollution," said Bi Haidong, the city's deputy mayor.

Government authorities in Fengkai County, Guangdong Province, which borders Guangxi, on Saturday warned that water in a section of the Hejiang River had been tainted by upstream pollution.

An investigation found thallium and cadmium in the river, Fengkai's publicity department said in a statement. Both thallium and cadmium are toxic to humans.

Bi said some small-scale mining companies in Hezhou illegally discharge sewage without treatment, which can result in pollution.

Resources such as manganese, tungsten, rare earths, cadmium and thallium are found in Hezhou.
