Road cave-in a recurring peril in Zhengzhou crossroad

A 200-meter section of a road in Zhengzhou, central Henan Province, caved in more than ten times in the past two years because of an underground pipe, today's Dahe Daily reported.

A big hole appeared in the crossroad of Mianfang Road and Qinling Road after a heavy truck passed on July 5. The cavity was about 3 meters in diameter and 1.5 meters deep.

A local resident, Chen Guoqiang, told the newspaper that this section of the road had collapsed more than ten times because a leaking hot water pipe eroded the soil under the road surface. His claim was confirmed by local authorities.

A public works department official said almost all of the cave-in incidents were caused by the leaking pipe. They have reported to higher officials and asked for a thorough repair of this road section, but have not received any order.

The road was repaired on Saturday and patrols were dispatched to check for new hazards and ensure the safety of vehicles and pedestrians.
