Road mayhem kills pregnant woman

A PREGNANT woman was one of five people killed when a car ran out of control last night in downtown Nanjing, Jiangsu Province.

At the time of going to press doctors were fighting to save the life of the woman's baby.

Four other pedestrians were injured and six parked cars were damaged in the incident, the Nanjing-based Modern Expressed reported today.

Police have detained the driver, a 44-year-old man surnamed Zhang who lived nearby.

Witnesses said the car, a black Buick LaCrosse, first knocked down a young man in front of a supermarket on Jinsheng Road. He only suffered a slight injury and his pregnant wife who was standing next to him was untouched.

Then the car accelerated into watermelon booths 300 meters away on the opposite side of the road. It smashed into a dumpcart and knocked down two traders, Li Ying and Wang Dianfu.

Wang, 45, hurt his leg. He recalled seeing the car charging towards him but knocking Li down first.
The car careered on, running into and killing a middle-aged cyclist next.

The car continued speeding along the road and hit another couple, knocking the pregnant woman against a parked car. The couple died at the scene of the accident.

The car ran into other pedestrians before it was finally brought to a halt by a taxi.
