Road revamp leaves ATM hanging 2 meters above street level

Some frustrated residents from a neighborhood in northeast China's Shenyang city said they would have to grow to the height of retired basketballer Yao Ming in order to use an automatic teller machine they've dubbed "the tallest ATM machine in Shenyang."

The ATM machine, located at the intersection of Qishan and Jingjiang roads, is now about 2 meters above the ground, making it difficult for most users to reach. The problem was caused by recent street construction that caused a 1-meter-tall platform under the machine to be demolished, local media reported.

A user surnamed Liu, about 1.82 meters tall, was seen standing on his tiptoes at the machine, one hand grabbing his clothes in an attempt to block the sunshine that was making the screen hard to see as he struggled to input his bank card password.

He finally gave up because the machine's height and its visibility problems had prevented him from completing the moves to withdraw cash with his card.

Many residents from the neighborhood have complained of the inconvenience posed by the machine's height.

Some said they had to bring stools in order to use the machine.

The machine is installed on the wall of a senior care center. The center's manager, surnamed Li, said the podium by the ATM machine was demolished when the road was being revamped about two months ago.

He suggested the bank relocate the ATM machine.

The bank had given no comment on the complaints yet.
