Roasting of whole camel carcass raises a stink

A CAMEL carcass was roasted on the side of the road yesterday in Jilin city of northeast China’s Jilin Province, but while the chef had a license to cook the huge beast, the scene frightened many passersby, according to New Culture Newspaper.
The unusual barbecue was done as a commercial promotion and a seller surnamed Peng said the camel, impaled on a spit, was raised for food and he had a permit to roast it. The roasted camel was given away for free today to anyone who wanted to try it. The newspaper did not say what business was being promoted, but verified that they did have a license.
An onlooker surnamed Guo was skeptical about the legality of the open-air barbecue, noting that it was frightening to children. Others also expressed their disapproval. It was first time that people recalled a whole camel being roasted.
The carcass was two meters in length and 1.8 meters in height, and the camel likely weighed about 250 kilograms, according to the chef.
Experts said the barbecue would be illegal if the camel was wild since wild camels are protected animals in China.
