Robber at large after 590,000-yuan bank heist

POLICE is hunting a masked man who robbed 590,000 yuan (US$89,075) of cash from bank in Jiangsu Province yesterday morning , Yangtze Evening News reported.

Police in Xuyu County, Huai'an City, said the robbery happened in Xuyu Rural Cooperative Bank Shiliying Branch. While a bank clerk, surnamed Jiang, was taking a code case containing 590,000 yuan in cash from the back door into the business hall after the cash carrier left at about 7am, a masked man suddenly rushed out, hit Jiang with a stick and ran away with the case.

A witness, surnamed Zhang, told the newspaper that he saw the suspect running toward the back door with a hammer, but when he got downstairs the suspect was already gone.

"The path in the bank's backyard is quite complicated. Some people get lost on the way to the bank," Zhang said. "But the suspect ran off fast, indicating he was familiar with the place."
