Rock star detained after drugs raid at his home

A CHINESE rock star has been detained by police for smoking marijuana at a party at his home in Beijing where another 50 people were taken away for alleged drug abuse.

Xie Tianxiao confessed to taking drugs and handed over 2.68 grams of marijuana hidden in his studio to the police on January 18. He has been transferred to a detention center and will be kept in the center for five days.

After he is released, he has to take regular urine tests, bjjdzx.org, the website of Beijing's anti-narcotics campaign, reported yesterday.

Among those taken away were members of Reflector and Thin Man, bands who had hit out at drugs in their songs, the report said.

Reflector called on people to "abandon drugs" in the lyrics of its 2007 song "Poison."

Media reports hailed the song as the rock band's declaration to fight drug abuse.

Thin Man band member Dai Qin, in an interview, had said: "Only one person in our band smokes."

In 2009, singer Man Wenjun, his wife and more than 20 people attending a birthday party at a Beijing club tested positive for drugs.

Movie director Zhang Yuan was discovered using drugs in a Beijing studio in 2008, and in 2007 pop singer Xie Dong and his girlfriend were caught using drugs in his mother's apartment in Beijing.
