Rocket malfunction delays Tiangong-1 launch

The launch of China's Tiangong-1 unmanned space module was postponed pending an investigation into a recent failed orbiter launch, Xinhua news agency reported yesterday.

The delay came after a carrier rocket for the experimental orbiter SJ-11-04, similar to the one used for Tiangong-1, failed to enter the Earth's orbit due to a malfunction on August 18, the spokesperson for China's manned space engineering project told Xinhua.

An investigation into why the experimental orbiter launch failed is still ongoing and it's unclear whether the malfunction was related to the carrier rocket.

A new launch date for the Tiangong-1 will be decided based on the outcome of the investigation, the spokesperson said.

The Long-March II-F, the carrier rocket that will launch the Tiangong-1 into orbit, is China's most well-known and reliable carrier rocket. Developed in 1992, the rocket has successfully propelled seven Chinese spacecraft into orbit.
