Rogue bus driver arrested

A BUS driver, whose wild driving rampage in southern Guangdong left four dead and 11 injured, was arrested yesterday, Shanghai Morning Post reported today.

Li Guoqing, 46, drove an empty bus through Huizhou City on Tuesday, causing chaos in the streets because he was angry at having to work when he was on sick leave, police said on Wednesday after a preliminary investigation.

Li had not drunk alcohol and was undergoing a psychological assessment, Huizhou police said.

Li had asked for a sick leave on Monday and this was given. But his boss phoned on Tuesday and asked him to work to replace another driver. He refused at first but when the boss called again he came into work, waited in the terminal for an hour then took the bus out on its fatal journey.

Li drove the bus for 7 kilometers from Huizhou Avenue to Huizhou Bridge and was stopped by police at Honghuahu Road in Huizhou City at 6pm. On the way he ran several red lights and drove into a taxi at Gaobangshan Road. Two trucks and a car then collided with the taxi killing the driver and three passengers onboard.
