Rogue bus ride leaves four dead

FOUR people were killed and 11 injured when a bus collided with 28 vehicles and two bicycles in southern Guangdong Province last night, Guangzhou Daily reported today.

The No. 889 bus driver, Li Guoqing, 46, has been detained by police and could not explain the accident, police said.

Li drove the bus without passengers or a conductor for seven kilometers from Huizhou Avenue to Huizhou Bridge and was stopped by police at Honghuahu Road in Huizhou City at 6pm. On the way he ran several red lights and drove into a taxi at Gaobangshan Road. Two trucks and a car behind the taxi then collided with the taxi killing the driver and three passengers onboard.

Because it was rush hour, the police only managed to stop the bus after it had hit the taxi.

Li, from central Hubei Province, had driven the bus along its usual route but drove erratically, police said.

One onlooker, surnamed Wen, said the driver had just been told his daughter had been killed by his son-in-law.

Police are continuing their investigations.
