Rubber glove found inside woman's tumor
A woman in Ningbo, eastern Zhejiang Province was surprised to find that a surgical glove left in her abdomen from an earlier surgery is the cause of her gastric cancer.
The 33-year-old woman surnamed Yuan has sued two hospitals -- Zhenhai District Longsai Hospital where she delivered a baby by cesarean section in 2005 and Ningbo Women and Children Hospital where she had an ovarian tumor removed in 2011, but both denied the responsibility.
As Yuan still felt pains in her abdomen after last year's surgery, she came to Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center for treatment and Shanghai doctors cut out an egg-sized tumor connected to her stomach. Pathological analysis showed there was a surgical glove inside the tumor.
The rubber glove irritated her stomach and caused the tumor growth, said Shanghai doctors who estimated that it had been left in her belly for at least several months, City Express reported today.
The Zhenhai District People's Court heard the case yesterday. Yuan was demanding 210,000 yuan (US$33,348) in damages but the two hospitals denied having anything to do with the glove.
The court didn't make a verdict yesterday and commissioned some specialists to determine how long the rubber glove had stayed in Yuan's body, the report said.
