Ruffians detained for fighting on a plane
TWO airline passengers were detained today after they beat another passenger and fought with security guards on board a Sichuan Airlines plane from Nanning to Harbin as it made a midway stop in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province on Saturday.
One offender stepped on the seat of the victim, Wang Bin, to take a bag from the overhead compartment without taking off his shoes. This triggered a quarrel, the Wuhan airport police said.
The pair began to beat Wang, who was traveling with his wife and a five-year-old child, and caused his mouth to bleed, said Mou Hong, a Sichuan Airlines official, said.
They also struck on-board security guards with fists, who came up to stop the fighting, Mou said.
The two offenders rushed back to their seats only when some passengers warned to call the police, he added.
The airport police identified the two offenders according to descriptions by Wang and other passengers and summoned the pair to a police station for questioning yesterday.
Li Shurong, a Shanghai lawyer, said passengers on the plane can sue the two men for any losses the delay caused them.
Under China's Aviation Law, the pilot has the right to take proper measures such as flying back or making an emergency landing to protect passengers when there is a disturbance in the cabin or the safety of the plane is under threat.
A fight between two Chinese passengers forced a Swissair plane carrying 200 people from Zurich to Beijing to turn back after it had flown more than six hours in August.
