Run-over toddler, ignored by 18 passers-by, dies
Wang Yue, the two-year-old toddler run over by two vans and left unattended on the street by 18 cold-hearted passers-by in southern China's Foshan City a week ago, died early this morning.
The General Hospital of Guangzhou Military Command said they were unable to rescue the girl who passed away at 0:32am.
Her brain and other vital organs started deteriorating yesterday and doctors earlier expected the most optimistic outlook for her would be to survive in a vegetative state.
Surveillance camera footage of the incident showed 18 people passed her indifferently. The 19th passer-by, a female garbage collector, came to her aid about seven minutes after the first hit and as the toddler desperately clung onto life.
The incident has triggered heated debate about whether Chinese people have lost their moral compass amid swift economic development over the past decades.
