Russian PM Putin in China seeking closer ties

RUSSIAN Prime Minister Vladimir Putin opened talks with his Chinese counterpart Premier Wen Jiabao today, at the start of a two-day visit that he believes will be "a positive development" in bilateral relations.

During the visit at the invitation of Premier Wen, Putin will attend the 16th regular meeting between the two countries' premiers. The regular meetings, first established in 1996, have become an important platform for guiding and coordinating bilateral cooperation between China and Russia.

Chinese President Hu Jintao and chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress, Wu Bangguo, will also meet with Putin.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin is due to hold talks with Vice Premier Wang Qishan during the visit to try to narrow disagreements that have held Russia back from signing a 30-year deal to supply China with up to 68 billion cubic meters of gas per year.

China and Russia will work together to deepen cooperation in culture and humanities over the next decade, said senior Chinese and Russian officials in Beijing today.
